Why This Community?
The Batwa live more than 12 hours from the nearest disc golf course, which made local access essential. Partnering with Fight for the Forgotten allowed us to add disc golf to a community already benefiting from their work, creating a bridge to neighboring villages where connection has been a challenge. Historically underserved for centuries, the Batwa now have a sport that encourages community, joy, and engagement, while also opening doors for future outreach in the region.
About this Project
The Batwa Whole Community Development Project, led by Fight for the Forgotten, is a multi-faceted effort to create a safe and dignified space for the displaced Batwa and surrounding tribal communities. In 2023, the Paul McBeth Foundation partnered with Fight for the Forgotten to add disc golf to this transformative initiative, offering a new recreational outlet that aligns with the project’s broader goals.
The beginner-friendly course was inspired by a May 2023 visit from a PMF team member who introduced disc golf to the community. The Batwa quickly embraced the sport, showing strong competitiveness and eagerness to improve. We see tremendous potential for the course to grow as interest builds.
A unique element of this project is that the baskets were built in Uganda by partners from Project 2.3 at Ndejje University. Together, we developed a professional basket design that could be manufactured locally. Ten baskets were completed for the Batwa course, and we expect this partnership to lead to more baskets — and more courses — across Uganda in the future.
