Paul McBeth Foundation and Partners to Host Free Youth Disc Golf Event at Palmer Park

Throw For More disc golf fundraiser by Paul McBeth Foundation

DETROIT, Mich. - Ahead of the 2026 PDGA Professional Disc Golf World Championships, the Paul McBeth Foundation (PMF), UPlay, and People for Palmer Park are teaming up to introduce Detroit-area youth to disc golf through a free community event at Palmer Park.

Play Disc Golf at Palmer Park will take place Saturday, August 22, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Palmer Park Junior Disc Golf Course. The event is designed for children ages 8 to 18, with a particular focus on youth from the surrounding community who have never played disc golf before.

Rather than a competitive tournament, the event will provide a welcoming introduction to the sport. Participants will learn the basics of disc golf through instruction from experienced players and professionals before heading onto Palmer Park's junior course for a casual nine-hole round. Volunteer guides will also be available to assist groups throughout the day.

Each participant will receive at least one free disc donated by the Paul McBeth Foundation, allowing them to continue playing after the event. Families will also receive information about opportunities to attend the 2026 Professional Disc Golf World Championships hosted at Kensington Metropark August 25 through August 31.

The event is part of a broader effort to make sure the excitement surrounding the World Championships creates an impact beyond tournament week and introduces new players to the sport. Palmer Park already provides youth and families with a place to play disc golf, and the goal of the event is to help more people living near the park discover that opportunity.

For PMF, that long-term connection is especially important. The foundation's mission is to develop and introduce sustainable disc golf experiences in underserved locations with limited or no access to the sport. PMF's Project 3.3 consisted of completing and equipping an existing 18 hole course at Palmer Park while adding a 9 hole junior course to suit newer players.

UPlay will support the event's youth instruction and beginner-focused clinic, while People for Palmer Park will provide local outreach, park knowledge, and connections with families in the surrounding community.

The goal is for children to leave Palmer Park knowing how to play, owning a disc they can use again, and understanding that there is a course in their own community where they can continue enjoying the sport.
